On May 26, 2004, Director-General of the Information Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kong Quan was interviewed by Editor-in-Chief Szombathy Pál and some other journalists of Magyar Hirlap and took their questions on China-Hungary relations, bilateral economic and trade cooperation, the role of the European Union (EU), regional cooperation in Asia, the Iraqi issue and the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Kong made positive remarks on the smooth development of China-Hungary relations, indicating that China would like to make joint efforts with Hungary to further deepen mutual understanding and trust and promote the continuous expansion and enhancement of bilateral friendly cooperation. Kong said the Chinese side attaches importance to Hungary's trade deficit in bilateral trade and proposes to strike a rough balance by actively developing bilateral trade. In fact, Hungary's export to China increased by 200% in the first quarter of this year, which far exceeds the growth margin of China's import in foreign trade. This shows China's efforts have scored initial results and the prospect for bilateral economic and trade cooperation remains bright.
Pál and his delegation came to China at the invitation of China's Economic Daily and have visited Chongqing, Yichang, and Beijing.
